Buyer cautionShort-term rental status here is a grey area. The building is understood to be grandfathered as a nonconforming hotel use, which can allow short-term rentals, but published sources disagree. Before you buy, confirm the unit's permitted use with the City Department of Planning and Permitting and the association.

The Hawaiian Monarch is a 44-story concrete tower completed in 1979 with about 439 units. Most units are studios of roughly 200 to 260 square feet, along with one-bedroom units of about 476 to 676 square feet and a few larger two-bedroom units; only the one-bedrooms have full kitchens. The lower floors hold restaurants, car rental businesses and a public parking garage.

The building is near the west entrance to Waikiki off McCully Street by the Ala Wai Canal. Hilton Hawaiian Village, Ala Moana and the main Waikiki strip are within walking distance.

Rentals: Hawaii Living's Waikiki condotel guide (updated Feb 2026) describes the building as a grandfathered nonconforming hotel exempt from the NUC requirement, and Locations Hawaii lists it as zoned for legal vacation rentals with restrictions.
